David Franco:
We are starting a new trek through the E.J. Gold book, "Practical Work on Self." The book details 24 exercises. Each exercise is a practical demonstration of a spiritual principle. Our job in this class is to find ways and means of demonstrating and working with these principles in our daily life.

It is with a certain amount of apprehension that I announce the class. Once we start, we are launching our boats out into new waters. I do not know how many times I have participated in this series of exercises, nor do I know how many times I have presented the material, but I do know that at some point in each exercise, I find myself on some uncertain ground of a new land.

I am inviting you to join me on this voyage. The practice is best done together. There are two reasons. First we help each other learn what the exercises may be and how to manifest them. Then each and everyone of us is a carrier of this information for others. We can help our fellow voyagers on their path. Each exercise requires each of us to work out our own puzzle of "HOW TO" do each step. We do that for ourselves, then we can help others do it as well.

I am anticipating each class to last about 1.5 hours. The first hour will be on the target chapter and a 1/2 hour on the subsequent chapter.

As a long-term veteran of several serious spiritual paths I can tell you that spiritual wisdom is attained in two ways: by direct experience, and by contagion. We catch it from those who have it. Catching the frequency of a master requires being receptive--but not passive.

Over dinner I said to E.J.: “The language in PWOS is obscure to some readers, particularly in the first chapter. I know this was not an accident because you are very precise with words. I surmise that you used language in particular ways in order to keep from activating the reader’s mental assumption that they know what you are talking about; so they take in what you are saying from a fresh place instead of filtering it through what they already know. Was this your intention?”

E.J. said yes. He told me that he wanted to bring the material and understanding out from within his reader, holding the reader responsible for stepping up to the plate and formulating a response that is not only in the nature of The Work, but is The Work itself.

Direct experience. Contagion. Ownership of the experience.

E.J. Gold is an excellent person from whom to catch wisdom. If you are and wish to remain self-important or an arm-chair intellectual, don’t bother to read his book, “Practical Work on Self.” This little bomb is not for those who wish to be spoon-fed or debate concepts but for those who desire a more intimate connection with daily life.
